2nd Indian Steel Steel Conference

The Crown, Bhubaneswar

06th Mar,2025

About the Event

Background

India has vast reserves of iron ore, non-coking coal, and skilled labour. The per capita steel consumption is only about 84 kg compared to the global average of 225 kg. The steel demand is on the rise due to the large number . of infrastructure projects planned by the government and the rise of the automobile and manufacturing industries. India can be the lowest in cost for production of steel and can export a lot like China. The GOI has planned 300 Million Tonnes (MT) of steel production by 2030–31 and 500 MT by 2047. Steel plants, both in the public and private sectors, have planned to set up greenfield steel plants as well as expand their existing plants.

However, these projects face many hurdles in the timely implementation of these projects due to various factors like land acquisition, forest and environmental clearances, mining rights, Arranging funds, timely processing of bills by the clients, and many others arising due to ‘Red Tape’. Because of these, some projects get abandoned and others take an unduly long time, resulting in a steep increase in project cost. In view of the emphasis on decarbonisation and carbon-free steelmaking routes, suitable and sustainable technological routes need to be selected for the long-term viability of the projects, and in this respect, global assistance is needed.

ISR has therefore planned to organise this program by convergence of all agencies involved. Odisha is now the epicentre of all new steel plants due to its vast reserves of rich iron ore, non-coking coal, several ports, and good infrastructure like roads and a lot of new railway projects, besides facilities for higher education in science, engineering, and management.

We expect the presence of chief executives of all major steel plants in India besides the secondary sector, mine owners, executives from banks, technology providers like SMS, Danieli, Primetals, Midrex, Tenova, etc.

This can augment setting up steel plants and expanding these within the scheduled time and projected investment.
