The technology designed to minimize hydrogen sulfide emissions from the sources of the Cherepovets Steel Works was patented by the company in 2018. It consists of cooling the slag in a thin layer without watering. Unique special equipment in a heat-resistant design shovels the slag into a trench for several hours with the layer-by-layer discharge of slag into a trench.
This allows hot slag to be processed with temperatures up to 800 degrees Celsius. As a result, the average maximum concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the atmospheric air, recorded by observation post No 1 Zhukova 4, for 9 months of 2020 decreased by 67% compared to 2011 before the start of experiments to reduce water use in the framework of R&D.
Severstal Russian Steel Division CEO Evgeny Vinogradov said “Excluding slag sprinkling with water, we have reached concentrations at the standard level. Of course, one cannot ignore natural precipitation, which affects the number of emissions, but this is incomparable with regular irrigation, which is still practised in the world metallurgy. I would like to note that our developments are advanced for Russia.”
