IN FOCUS
Strategy for Development of Mineral Base Industry
The mineral resources of Orissa form a very
important constituent of India’s mineral wealth that include
a wide variety of ores and minerals such as, iron ore,
chromite, manganese ore, bauxite, non-coking coal, lime
stone, dolomite, nickel ore, vanadium ore, copper ore,
lead ore, fireclay, china clay, graphite, quartz and quartizite,
mineral sands like ilmenite, sillimanite, zircon and tine
ore. The high grade minerals are essential for development
of various mineral based industries such as iron and steel,
ferro alloys, coal based fertilizers, thermal power station,
non-ferrous industries. Lean and off grade ores mostly
cater to the needs of raw materials in cement, refractories,
ceramics, chemical and glass industries. Thus, the scope
for value addition in mineral based industries in the State
is immense.
SPECIAL COVERAGE
Aluminium Industry in India- A perspective
Aluminium Industry in India is a highly concentrated
industry with the top five companies constituting the
majority of the overall aluminium production of the
country. With the growing demand of aluminium in India,
the Indian aluminium industry is also growing at an
enviable pace. In fact, the production of aluminium in
India is currently outpacing the demand.
REFRACTORY
Slide gate refractory development for aggressive steels
Alumina and magnesia represent the most common refractory materials for steel making. Both are widely used in numerous applications in the
continuous casting operation. For the application of slide gate plates, use of alumina is far more prevalent than magnesia due to its superior thermomechanical
properties. However, aluminous materials have inferior chemical corrosion susceptibility to iron oxide and other steel making oxides
than magnesia-based materials.

METAL FOCUS
Scope for value addition in metal based industries
The whole cycle of metal production is a process of value addition at every stage. A mineral buried underground has no more
value to humanity than a pebble or stone lying on the ground. In the event of the same mineral being mined in volumes and
to a required specification, it acquires a value and is in a position to fetch profits for the miner. Similarly, as we go on processing
it to a final consumer usable product, it keeps on acquiring additional value and a price which a consumer or customer is
willing to and is capable of paying.
TECHNOLOGY / PROCESS REVIEW
Beach - Sand Mineral Industry in Orissa an Overview
Orissa is endowed with valuable resources of
beach-sand minerals, considered to be one of the
prominent beach-sand mineral deposits of the world. The
eastern coastal belt of about 150 km stretching from
Mahanadi basin till Andhra Pradesh border, has been
investigated by Atomic Mineral Division of Government
of India and number of potential areas have been identified
in the belt containing heavy minerals, ranging in grade
from 5% to 30%. The southern block of the coastal belt
near Chhatrapur is more promising and at present under
exploitation by India Rare Earth Ltd, for the OSCOM
Plant. The beach-sand minerals constitute a group of heavy
minerals, such as Ilmenite, Ratile, Zincon, Monazite,
Garnet and Sillimanite.
Enhanced Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction in the Aluminum Remelting Industry
Aluminum industry average aluminum re-melting heat
requirements are approximately 2200 BTU per pound
(5,166.843 KJ/KG) of scrap. The heat requirements of
melting aluminum scrap is a major contributor to the variable
cost. In the Mid-1990s, Jupiter Aluminum Corporation (JAC)
was faced with escalating fuel prices and undertook a
dedicated private research and development program designed
to reduce fuel consumption. In order to make combustion
a more efficient process, Dietrich Gross, envisioned the use
of oxygen instead of air. This vision, combined with a
rigorous research and development program, produced a
viable business solution. The use of oxygen in moderate
temperature processes, such as aluminum recycling, had
previously not been successful.
TECHNOLOGY FOCUS
Nalco Mine Management System
Mine management system has evolved to become
an integral part of today’s mine operations. Present day
crisis has resulted in mines significantly reducing costs
and expenditures while searching for ways to operate
more efficiently to realize mine capacities. Mine
Management systems such as the Truck Dispatch System
(TDS) have been one of the key focus areas. However,
the gap between realised capacity and inherent capacity
potential represents lost opportunity. In order to harness
this potential it is imperative that we minimizing
operational losses and optimizing asset utilisation. This
would result in maximizing individual process efficiencies
and overall mine productivity.
