COMMENT :
India is a fast expanding aluminium market with immense growth potential
Globally, the demand for aluminium is projected to fall by around 7% in 2009 on account of subdued conditions in the key user industries. However, China is projected to maintain the consumption levels of 2008 mainly due to the fiscal stimulus package that is likely to support its ailing economic growth. The revival in the demand for the metal is expected to start from 2010 globally. As per Alcoa, world’s largest aluminium producer, the demand for aluminium is projected to grow at around 6% CAGR till 2018 on account of newer packaging applications and increased usage in automobiles, consumer durables, construction and defense.

IN FOCUS
Prospect of commercial production of ferro-nickel production in India
The most important use of nickel is in steel industries where bulk of it or nickel in alloy form is required for the production of stainless steel.
The country imports ferro-nickel as there is no viable process to produce ferro-nickel from the internal resources. Looking into the country’s
import of nickel to meet its requirement, efforts have been made to produce ferro-nickel from the workable deposit lateritic ores or chromite
overburden in Sukinda region, Orissa. The lateritic ore or Chromite overburden materials is reduced by pan sintering technique followed by
magnetic separation and the smelting of magnetic fraction to produced ferro nickel. The smelting studies have been carried out using various
amount of reductant and it has been possible to produce Fe-Ni of grade varying from 4 – 25% Ni.
Indian aluminium expanding capacity, but is the required coal available?
India’s alumina refinery capacity is expected to increase to over 10 MTPA, if
all planned expansions materialize and there is every possibility of the country’s
smelter capacity to go up by 1000kt to 2600kt/y taking into consideration the
planned doubling of capacities by Hindalco, Aditya Aluminium and Sterlite
Industries. Aditya Birla Group’s Utkal Alumina and Aditya Aluminium may also
double their capacities of refinery/smelter by 2020.

REFRACTORY
Refractory for aluminum industry
Refractory plays an important role not only for
metallurgical but also for chemical & petrochemical, glass,
ceramic, cement and lime industries. Major research work
has so far been concentrated for the development of new
refractory and also for its reduction in consumption for steel
industries. As nonferrous industry is growing, more R&D
efforts are required in order to develop new refractory and
also to reduce the consumption of the same. In case of nonferrous
industry, substantial growth is expected in aluminium
sector. Accordingly, major aluminum industries in India
have geared-up for expansion. Hence, there is a good scope
for Indian Refractory Manufacturers to develop new refractory
for aluminum industry.
