Towards a one trillion USD Indian economy, setting a milestone

topics & trends

More steel to fortify Bengal industrial reawakening
This indeed marks the beginning of a whole new epochthe headstart towards a new tomorrow of industrial prosperity. Following the benchmarks set by the titans like the Tatas and Jindals other big dometic steelmakers are flocking down to the state to encash its burgeoning economy.

VIEWPOINT
Towards a one trillion USD Indian economy, setting a milestone
Indian economy witnessed a robust growth during FY2006-07 for the fourth time in succession. Buoyed by spectacular performances by manufacturing and certain services, the economy ended FY2006-07 with a growth of 9.4% exceeding the earlier projection of 9.2%. With this and aided by the high growth along with a strengthening rupee in the Forex market, the economy has graduated to a USD 1 trillion one, the 12th such nation globally to reach the milestone.

FOCUS
Environmental issues related to the expanding Indian Steel Industry
Steel, in its many forms plays a crucial role in shaping modern industrial society. No material yet invented by man can match the versatility of steel in terms of strength, durability, formability, cost and recyclability (Table-1). As a product, it is the most eco-friendly of all materials. The rapid and continuing growth of the steel industry during last few decades bears testimony to the indispensability of steel as a vital resource for economic development.

AUTOMATION

Concept of laboratory automation in a modern metal works
Just as the production processes in metalmaking are constantly changing it is necessary for the accompanying measurement and monitoring systems to constantly meet new requirements. Since the chemical composition of metal cannot be measured as easily as the temperature, complex technical systems are needed here which are combined into a metalworks laboratory. The work steps required for this such as sample transport, processing, analysis and evaluation can be automated to a great extent today.

COMPANY NEWS
RINL on its mark to reach the milestone of 16mt facility by 2020
Capacity expansion programme of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the holding company of Vizag Steel Plant is progressing fast with its brownfield expansion at Balachervu in Vishakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. The ongoing expansion programme is, however, only the first step towards Vizag Steel finally becoming a 16m tonne facility by 2020. The project is going to be
commissioned in two phases.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Indian Steel Industry on a steady growth path
During the first half of 2006-07, the industry registered higher production and generated higher profits as compared with H1 of 2005-06 – paving the way for a robust growth in the whole year of 2006-07. And, the industry has achieved this growth despite the higher prices of raw materials. India’s finished steel output may touch a level of 45 Mt in 2006-07. It has to be increased by another 15 Mt in next five years and by a further 50 Mt in the next 8 years to match the projections
of National Steel Policy.

HOT ROLLING
Wear - resistant, precision flat bearings for rolling mills
Mill stands and roll chocks are outfitted with wear plates which act as guides and bearings. Sliding wear, impact and corrosion enlarge the total mill clearance and cause misalignment with detrimental effects on the rolling process. Specially designed highly wear-resistant compound steel flat bearings drastically reduce these problems.

REFRACTORY
Indian refractory industry gears up to make the nation's 200-mln-mt steel target by 2020 a bold reality
Global steel industry is on an upswing. If the year 2002-2003 saw the beginning of the surge in steel production, the year 2006-07 has provided another landmark with an aggregate of 45 million mt of crude steel in the country. Indian steelmakers too, both private and public sector players, remain upbeat about their improved volume of turnover, capacity utilization, sales and profit margins.

STEEL INTERNATIONAL
Automatic surface inspection as a productivity tool for hot and cold mill shops with Siroll PL SIAS
Surface appearance is the cumulative result of processing interactions within a long manufacturing chain, from the melt shop to the finishing lines. Siroll PL SIAS provides an accurate description of surface status in hot and cold mills and permits the quality and process engineers to do their main job: keeping informed, making timely decisions and improving mill process.

STEEL TECHNOLOGY
New Generation High Strength Steel for Automotive Application
Since 1977 the major increase in demand and consumption of material for automotive sector is not aluminium or other metal but it is the steel in high strength category or simply AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel). The average amount of high strength steel sheet for vehicle jumped from 125 lbs to 338 lbs. In this category the yield strength of steel is higher than 40 ksi or 280 MPa.
