VIEWPOINT
Steel industry in developing world expressing higher cautiousness on the developed regions
Reconciling an unabated growth pattern ever in the nip of the worst recession was the major area of concern for the world wide industrial houses, which feared of shrinking to nothing with every dip in production and price scales. After a keen observation into the production graphs, in the opinion of the world economic panel, the present situation although creepy, but then has some hazy signs of growth, that could to some extent lead to economic modification thereby churning out sizeable fortunes for the choking industries.
COMPANY PROFILE
Choice of most suitable paint system determined by usage & expected performance
Painted steel sheets are generally referred to as colour coated sheets. The sheets used particularly for roofing and walling in the construction industry are mostly pre-painted steel sheets, which usually have metallic coating beneath the paint. The substrate i.e. metallic coated steel coil is processed on a continuous paint line to get the pre-painted steel coil. It is these pre-painted steel coils, which are used for making different profile sheets/shapes/designs for final usages. A typical paint line involves activities like uncoiling, cleaning, pretreatment, primer application, painting (top and backer coat), baking and recoiling.
FOCUS
The bounce back in the recovery phase would be primarily led by steady domestic consumption
Respected Mr. Mohanty, distinguished invitees, and my colleagues from the refractory industry, It is my proud privilege as Chairman of IRMA, the national body for the refractories industry in India, to extend a warm welcome to Mr. S.S. Mohanty, Executive Director (Materials Management) of Rourkela Steel Plant to our 48th Annual General Meeting as the Chief Guest.
India’s mineral industry grows in the thick of dark times
Passing through the millennium’s worst recession ever with serious scars, it was an absolute doubt on the part of the steel makers world wide to think any miraculous event happening to sooth the economy already groping in the dark. However a marginal positive bend in the economic curves led the people from the industry circle to breathe some relief, over their notion on production levels resting on negative zone for an elongated time
frame.

Konecranes redefines lifting function for steel industry Konecranes does more than just lift steel, it helps lift the steel business to new levels of productivity...
As the world once again focuses on the economics of manufacturing steel, Konecranes innovative steel mill cranes have helped pioneer and shape developments in steelmaking today. Facilities have become more cost-effective to build and operate by utilizing the Konecranes single-crane solutions for charge, ladle, billet, and maintenance cranes. Redundant features allow a single crane to do the job of two, making backup cranes obsolete.

from the recent economic slump that took the entire Indian industry into its grip for quite some time right
from the end of the last year. He also expressed his satisfaction over the demand growth in all the highly
growing industrial sectors in the country at present and reiterated that the current indications are positive
and expected to continue in future also; which speaks for the country’s brighter future and the business
prospects of his company as well.

Steel industry down but not out as recovery forecast for 2010 & new record consumption in 2012: MEPS
According to a new report from MEPS (International) Ltd entitled, Global Iron and Steel Production to 2013, world crude steel production in 2009 is forecast to be approximately 1200 million tonnes. This represents a reduction of almost 10 percent on the year earlier figure. All economic forecasters indicate an upturn in 2010. MEPS predicts a 5 percent improvement in steel output in that year. Further growth in steelmaking is forecast for the following three years as the global economy improves.
World stainless steel output to fall by 20% this year
The Turkish long product producers have increased their local offers this month. Buyers believe this move is not warranted. It has not been facilitated by solid orders. The flat product segment is still experiencing challenging trading conditions. Not much has changed in the UAE. Material imported last summer remains quayside. The present rate of utilization stays low. Values are now expected to be flat for some time.
REFRACTORY
Raw Material for Refractories in India - Problem & Prospects
The properties indicated for various Alumino Silicate and Alumina bearing raw materials indicate that the main raw material Bauxite is not
comparable and inferior to the Bauxite available from other countries, including China, Indian Bauxite is high in iron and titania, and hence
is likely to generate liquids at high temperature besides lowering the AI203 Content. Similarly, while Andaluisite is not available in the country,
Kyanite and Sillimanite which is currently available is not of superior quality as could be evidenced form its properties. These materials, therefore,
cannot be used directly for the production of good quality high Alumina refractories. Thus, most of the requirement of high quality Alumina-
Silicate products are produced from imported raw materials. The high purity sintered AI203 and tabular AI203 is produced in the country.
Studies on preformed spinel bonded low cement castables in relation to alumina content of spinel additive
Secondary metallurgy has become an essential step for high quality steel production. A significant advancement in quick & efficient secondary steel making processes has propelled a newer direction for improvement in refractories used for this process.
Recent changes in trends for refractories used are based on a) an increasing demand for clean steel b) severer conditions for operation e.g. increasing tapping temperatures, longer hold times, more aggressive metallurgical treatments etc. c) overall material cost/Mt of steel production.
FERRO ALLOY
Densification and Forging characteristics of Iron Compacts alloyed with Ferro-alloy powders
This paper deals with an experimental investigation to assess the response of separate additions of Ferro-manganese and Ferromolybdenum
powders prepared from commercial Ferro-alloy lumps to electrolytic iron powder on densification due to compacting,
sintering and forging. There has been no improvement in the compactability at 30 kg/mm2 pressure for additions of Fe-Mn (up to
1.6% Mn) and Fe-Mo ( up to 1.5% Mo) powders to iron. Sintering of the alloy compacts at 1100oC for 2 hrs. has shown nominal
increase in density while, it has improved hardness and tensile strength. Up set forging (20%) increased theoretical density within 6-
9% with improvement in hardness and tensile strength due to densification and work haardening of the compacts.
Forgeability evaluated by up set test in a 20 ton hydraulic press has been found to increase marginally for Mn additions, while Mo
additions in iron has not indicated significant effect. The forgeability values observed for alloyed compacts are lower than that of the
electrolytic iron. The hard characteristics of oxides and increasing contents of impurities in the additions of Ferro-alloy powders
adversely affect the characteristics investigated. Hence, it is expected that ferro-alloy powders of better purity can be employed for
beneficial effects on the characteristics studied.
