World steel’s all out efforts to regain strength from a catastrophic situation
Pointing that the global recovery is stronger than expected, experts have analyzed that apart from robust boost in the Chinese
demand for steel, the American and the European economy have also depicted a stronger steel market with rising demand
for the metal. In a current market forecast for demand and price of steel metal across the world suggest that the major
economies have shown tremendous growth potential for the metal and that after a serious fall in the price of the metal, the
price and the demand for the metal looks much lucrative… a report on the recent trends of the recovering world steel market.
FOCUS
LN Mittal a visionary who takes the world of steel in his strides at a blistering pace
Steel Tycoon Lakshmi Niwas (alias, Narayan) Mittal, the 57 year old non resident Indian living in Kensington, London, is the fourth richest person in the world, with a personal fortune of US$45.0 billion according to Forbes magazine. The Financial Times named Lakshmi Mittal its 2006 Person of the Year. He was also listed as the richest person in Britain in the Sunday Times Rich list 2005.
Colossal expansions with rapid consolidation help Indian steel keep rough times at bay
With major investments making inroads in the nation and the growth in the secondary steel sector, including electric arc and induction furnaces, sponge iron units and standalone rolling mills along with the set up of small and medium projects in the capacity range of 500,000 to one million tonne has made the steel sector gain more stronger foothold. He was too elated to mention that all the ongoing projects of the domestic steel majors that included 3 mt plant of Tata Steel in Orissa, 6 mt project also in Orissa by Essar Steel and 2.5 mt unit each in Orissa and Jharkhand have achieved tremendous progress in the recent times that is gradually paving a smooth way for 33 mt brown field capacity in the country.
Iron firms takes on pellet advantage for robust growth
Amidst a rough market situation, carrying the production lines in the most economical way is the chief concern of the people from the basic and key industries. They seem to be more open to the methods that would result in both time and cost advantage. The most recent move, these firms have undertaken is invest more into pellet plants to churn maximum benefits of pelletisation process.

STEEL TECHNOLOGY
State-of-the-art abrasive cutting machines to improve the operation of modern rolling mills
In order to respond to the increasingly demanding requirements of their customers and to remain competitive on the market, the steel mills have been facing pressure to adapt their operation procedures and production facilities to meet the most stringent criteria regarding product costs (to be as low as possible), production flexibility (as high as possible), product quality (as high and reliable as possible), etc. This also concerns the hot rolling operations as one of the main processes in the steel industry.
REFRACTORY
Development of improved quality spinel castable For steel ladle bottom
Monolithic lining in steel ladles is gradually gaining its pace, replacing conventional brick lining. Brick lining bottom is labor
intensive, which is gradually becoming a major cost bearing factor in developed countries, also it has a shortcomings of opening
joints during operation. On the contrary, monolithic bottom is easy to install and requires less time. The recent development
with more efficient particle packing and lower requirement have given a way to achieve improved green density and strength
without sacrificing the castable workability. As the density increases, the possibility of reduction of spalling resistance increases.
So, introduction of spinnel came into picture with an aim to reduce structural spalling which suppresses the slag penetration
to the cast bodies. The grain size distribution of the spinnel particles is playing a major role in determining the spalling resistance
as well as erosion and corrosion resistance. The present paper describes the development of such high corrosion and high
spalling resistance spinnel castable, which has been produced in commercial scale in our plant in China and has been sent for
field application to a plant in USA for use in their 220 Ton ladle bottom and has given encouraging life.
STRIP PROCESSING
Upgrading of existing process lines to face the crisis
Steelmakers worldwide aim at two main targets: lowering production costs and improving product quality. During economic downturns competition becomes tough and product quality together with production costs becomes critical for growth in a harsh market environment. These targets can be achieved by revamping existing processing lines while reducing investment costs. This paper describes the major revamping projects performed by Tenova Strip Processing, starting from the most recent ones, and highlights how the requirements of the major steelmakers worldwide were met.
