COLD ROLLING
Minimising skidding in cold rolling
Control of the roll-gap friction is essential for optimising the cold rolling process. High friction conditions can lead to increased roll forces, resulting in strip thickness variation and poor shape in the cold-rolled products. Low friction conditions can lead to skidding, which occurs when the work roll speed is higher than the strip speed at the exit of the roll-gap. Skidding problems can result in uncontrolled vibrations in the mill stand, leading to strip thickness oscillations and, in extreme cases, to strip breaks at high rolling speeds, giving rise to prolonged unscheduled delays.

REFRACTORY
Refractories as a part of the cooling system for modern day blast furnaces
Before the advent of modern lining philosophy, the refractory lining of blast furnace was considered as a sacrificial component. As a result, the performance of refractory material was the critical factor in achieving longer campaign life of the furnace. To overcome this, there has been a gradual change in the lining philosophy combining the advantage of sophisticated refractories and the associated cooling system. The present day blast furnace operation stresses on the heat extraction from the furnace to freeze a layer of process material on the working face which in turn acts as a barrier to further erosion of the lining.

FOCUS
High corrosion-resistant steel sheets - market trends and business strategies of steel mills
Corrosion resistance is one of the main concerns of such steel-consuming sectors as the construction and automotive industries. So far, galvanized steel sheets have mostly been considered as durable materials in severe environments. However, as the criteria for anti-corrosion materials have become more critical, zinc-aluminum alloyed coated steel sheets such as Zn-55%Al have begun rapidly replacing conventional products owing to the advantage of corrosion resistance in the field of construction materials. Most zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloyed products currently being developed are also expanding the range of the market.

Orissa to witness multiple SMEs with steel development
With more and more investments being poured in Orissa, soon the state will witness multiple small and medium enterprises (SME) mushroom in the future, as both the domestic as well as overseas steel giants are looking for opportunities and possibilities of developing SMEs around the large units proposed by them. Experts are of the view that opportunities for SME entrepreneurs exist in the areas such as structural steel, refractory, steel and concrete piles, pipes, propeller shafts and furnace building.

Steel prices are likely to drop
With the fall in demand for steel in the user industries of west like housing, autos and durables, steel prices are likely to be soften in the near future. The prices of the hot rolled coils have fallen on an average from US$1150 a tonne at its peak to US$900 a tonne. The market sources say that, due to a sharp fall in the prices in some markets of West Asia, prices of long products have fallen to large extent from US$1400 a tonne to US$900 a tonne.

STEEL MARKET
Foreign fund flows in Middle East markets seem to be a catalyst for strong Q4-2008
After an exciting end to 2007, traders entered the New Year 2008 eager for the release of fourthquarter earnings results to provide short-term direction to the market. Global equity markets started the year in poor shape however and previously high-flying emerging markets in Asia and Latin America suffered as investors feared that the economic slowdown in the US, and ongoing credit market problems, would derail global economic growth. MENA (Middle East & North Africa) markets gained as much as 6.5% in the first two weeks of the month reaffirming their lack of correlation to other global capital markets.

Credit crisis bites, EU steel prices fall, further reductions anticipated
MEPS said that, stainless steel prices are likely to slip further over the next few months. More production cuts are also envisaged for the rest of 2008. However, a revival in price and supply are anticipated early next year. The recovery is forecast to be modest but none the less significant after recent traumas. It said that poor demand across the globe is, currently, providing the backdrop for weak sentiment in the nickel and chromium markets. Stocks of the former metal on the LME remain at high levels. In fact, the price in week 40 this year fell to near USD 8,800 per tonne – its lowest point for more than five years.

VIEW POINT
US$25 million investment expected in Indian mining sector
India is endowed with a vast variety of mineral resources of certain minerals like barite, bauxite, chrome, coal, iron ore and manganese ranking among the 10 largest resources bases in the world. India is a globally leading mineral producer endowed with a rich resources base of several major minerals like coal, iron ore, bauxite etc. The Indian mineral industry has not only been the bed rock of its industrial development but also contributing significantly to the external trade of the country. The contribution of the industry in the national economy is going to rapidly increase driven by huge domestic demand. With this note opened the Global Mining Summit in Kolkata recently and the theme was Indian mining on the verge of a paradigm shift.

STEEL TECHNOLOGY
High performance and high tech in hot strip mills – From solutions to value
The SIROLLCIS HM concept for hot strip mills comprises know-how and expertise in process technology, layout competence, mechanics, electrics, drives and automation as well as turnkey competence from Siemens VAI’s own in-house resources.

Integrated concepts for finishing mill stands
The Siemens VAI finishing mill concept is the result of optimized mechanical design in conjunction with hydraulic and automation systems. The advanced mechatronic systems – hydraulic gauge control, bending and shifting system and hydraulic loopers – provide excellent results.

Application of New Hot-Rolled High-Strength Sheet Steels
Interest in high-strength steel has a lengthy history in the steel industry. Recent development of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) sheet steel depends upon the large amount of technical information available in this field. In response to the automobile industry’s demand to reduce overall vehicle weight and thereby improve fuel economy, and to satisfy safety and crash-worthiness requirements, the steel industry has developed a large variety of steels and processes for producing high-strength hotrolled and cold-rolled steel sheets.

Wireless Technology & Best Practices To Reduce Project Costs
The benefits of wireless seem obvious – “no wires”. Despite this, fewer than 1% of installed measurements in process plants and mills are wireless. Fortunately, real and perceived obstacles to wireless deployment are being overcome with improved technology, most recently the “self-organizing network”.

PRODUCT & MARKET
ZKL Bearing Housing -The Smart Choice for Smart Bearings
Being a veteran in the Industrial field, it is agreed that the right choice of housings and sleeves to make the right bearing perform at optimum level is the foremost criteria. Otherwise in spite of all the precautions taken for installing and maintaining the bearings, they are at a high risk.

Danieli Corus to supply the first new BF in North America in the last 30 years
Nucor Corporation has awarded the contract for the design and supply of a complete blast furnace plant and related installation parts for its new ironmaking facility, which may be built in St. James Parish, Louisiana to Danieli Corus. Nucor has applied for a permit to build the facility on the banks of the Mississippi River. Sites outside of the U.S. remain under consideration as well. The new “ Nucor Steel Louisiana” will produce 3 million tons of pig iron per year, employing the latest technologies to reduce emissions. The plans allow for future expansion to 6 million tons per year. This would be a breakthrough for the North American steel industry, since at the time of completion, the site will have the first new blast furnace commissioned on the continent in 30 years.

Hot metal desulphurization technology
Danieli Corus won six orders for De-S systems in 2007 and three, to date, in 2008. Most of the customers are in China. Some are existing clients who have the Danieli Corus coinjection system running in their shops, while others are new customers who join the crowd after in-depth technical and commercial analysis, and comparison with other technologies and suppliers. A privately owned steel mill, an emerging sector in China, also is on the list this year in addition to the state-owned companies. This striking success has demonstrated the strong market position of Danieli Corus desulphurization technology.
