IRON & STEEL REVIEW
May 2010

Iron & Steel industry moving towards green growth |
VIEWPOINT
Iron & Steel industry moving towards green growth
Steel industry needs to adopt suitable pollution prevention
and control measures with appropriate technology to ensure
minimal adverse impact on the environment and ecology.
Raw material with intensive carbon content, which forms
the primary source in steel production, is bound to influence
changes in climate. Mining also produces negative impact
on quality of air, water and soils. Therefore, it is important
to implement proper technology in the industry.
COMPANY NEWS
Bonfiglioli takes part in Hannover Messe,2010
Bonfiglioli Riduttori, a leading Company in the global
power transmission market, will take part into the Hannover
Messe 2010 edition (hall 14, stand H30), which sees Italy
as official Partner Country to underline the Italian innovative
force that plays a significant role in industry at an
international level.
SPECIAL FEATURE
COROMAX TM High Voltage Power Supply for Emission Reduction and Power Savings for Sinter Strand Electrostatic Precipitators
The electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is known to the steel production industry as the preferred dedusting equipment for sinter strands (figure 1). A way to improve the efficiency of ESP is installation of pulse systems as power supply, where ultra short (microsecond) pulses are applied to achieve a more efficient dust collection of especially very small high resistivity dust particles. By
applying pulse systems, existing ESP’s can be improved without physical enlargement, or new ESP’'s can be installed with smaller dimensions than ESP’s with traditional DC power supplies. COROMAX TM mrk. IV is the 4th generation of the most advanced high voltage
system in the market.
Water recycling in steel plant
The chilled soft water circuit is a closed circuit, hence it can be taken care of by nitrite and
the non oxidizing biocide dosages. Major loss of water from this circuit is due to leakages
and if they are arrested, water loss can be reduced substantially. Softening plants should
go for salt recycling, which will allow them to save water as well as salt and, as the effluents
from these plants are rich in hardness, it is easier to dispose them.
Reduction in Energy Consumption & GHG Emission in SAIL Plants by Introducing Efficient Combustion System
The iron and steel industry is constantly striving to reduce its energy consumption and thereby minimize its
overall costs. In the present scenario of global cost competitiveness, the challenge could be met by finding
solutions to reduce energy consumption, which is one of the major cost factors. Research & Development Centre
for Iron & Steel (RDCIS) is a corporate research centre for Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and nodal agency
for working out measures for reduction of energy consumption in its steel plants.
Optimized and Plantwide Energy Management in Steel Industry: SIMETAL Energy Manager – An Efficient Energy Use Pays Off
In the steel industry, energy-related costs to convert raw materials to final steel products typically account for approximately one quarter of total production costs. For most producers, however, there is normally an enormous potential to reduce the energy consumption and thus the related costs by applying innovative plant-wide energymanagement systems.
Environmental solutions increase competitiveness in mining and steel industries
The Siemen Industry Solutions Division (IS) is one of the world’s leading solution and service providers of plant and systems for industry and infrastructure, focusing on innovations that save resources, water and energy in metals and mining applications.
Climate Change, Risk and Steel Sector Solution through Sustainable Solid Waste Management
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues that the World faces today. Alarming negative effect is the global warming, brought about by Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. Climate change and the impact of emissions on the environment are of increasing concern to all stake holders. This is a major issue for steel industry due to largest energy consuming manufacturing industry (owing to its technological processes), it currently cannot avoid contributing to the problem.
STEEL TECHNOLOGY
Recent improvements in roll notching and marking technologies
Nineties represent a revolutionary decade for the technology of roll indention for rebar production.
Pushed by the growing demand coming from customers and market, and thanks to the wide potential of the new generation of CNC machines, some machine manufacturers invested in researches for advanced technologies applied to notching machines. As result of this, the best notching machines are today provided with devices and improved automations that make them able to carry out in automatic some operations that, in the past, demanded dedicated manpower.

Application of Low Volume Lubrication and Liquid Nitrogen in the Final Stand of a Tandem Cold Mill
In cold or skin pass rolling, the tasks roll gap lubrication, roll and strip cooling and cleaning conventionally are fulfilled by a single fluid (oil, emulsion or wet temper agent). In this paper a newly developed system is described, which, by separating these tasks, increases productivity and flexibility of the rolling process, improves the surface quality of the rolled strip, and allows enhanced control strategies in combination with appropriate online measurement devices and physically based process models.

REFRACTORY
Improvement of steel ladle lining life with MgO-C and Al2O3-MgO-C Refractories
In an integrated steel plant, steel ladles are the major consumer of refractories. In SAIL plants average lining life of steel ladles in continuous casting shop varies from 60 to 90 heats depending upon the secondary processing units and ladle capacity. Higher steel ladle life is essential to increase ladle availability for higher production.
The value in use of Steel Ladle Refractories Management
From the end of the last century into the first decade of the 21st century the liquid steel capacity of BOS plant no.2 at Corus IJmuiden has increased drastically and process conditions have changed. Due to these changes and ambitious output targets, not
only the life and availability of the steel ladles, but also monitoring of ladle use needed to be improved. Corus IJmuiden has
developed a ladle management system which allows us to track, manage and plan the ladle fleet.
Raw Materials for Refractories
Raw materials are the backbone of any manufacturing industry. The major criteria of salability of a product are its quality and price. Both these characteristics are invariably governed by the raw materials used for the manufacturing of the products. Similarly, in case of refractories, raw materials play a very vital role in formulating its performance in the market.
STEEL MARKET

Steel Industry is a booming industry in the whole world. The developmental projects especially the infrastructural works and real estate projects that have been booming around the developing countries increased the demand for it.
FOCUS
Strategy for Development of Mineral Base Industry
The mineral resources of Orissa form a very important constituent of India’s mineral wealth that include a wide variety of ores and minerals such as, iron ore, chromite, manganese ore, bauxite, non-coking coal, lime stone, dolomite, nickel ore, vanadium ore, copper ore, lead ore, fireclay, china clay, graphite, quartz and quartizite, mineral sands like ilmenite, sillimanite, zircon and tine ore. The high grade minerals are essential for development of various mineral based industries such as iron and steel, ferro alloys, coal based fertilizers, thermal power station, non-ferrous industries. Lean and off grade ores mostly cater to the needs of raw materials in cement, refractories, ceramics, chemical and glass industries. Thus, the scope for value addition in mineral based industries in the State is immense.
Playing the rules of the game
Hot Rolled Coil prices in the global market have climbed to about $700 per tonne fob and are on further rise. This
clearly indicates a surge in demand and efforts to enhance capacity utilisation of the existing Hot Strip Mills. When
there is a certain amount of steepness in market demand, the growth primarily emanates from demand for stock
accumulation and therefore, speculative element in demand is what may be the driving force behind this surge. Would
it sustain?
April spots on the raise of TSI iron ore index
Several factors have attributed for the recent drop price, such as the
outlook for steel demand in China with the government’s measures to still
the economy and housing market, reducing congestion at Indian ports,
increasing the availability of iron ore supply in major regions and
uncertainties about the impact of European sovereign debt on inter-bank markets and the consequential availability of trade finance.
