IRON & STEEL REVIEW
March 2010

The Union Budget 2010-11 with promise
|
VIEWPOINT
The Union Budget 2010-11 with promise
The Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee delivered more in Budget 2010
than was expected. It was a challenging job to roll back the stimulus
in a small and calibrated manner, as well as lower the fiscal deficit
significantly. But, the FM delivered more than this tight-rope balancing
act. The Finance Minister's speech has brought a sense of balance back
by indicating that India will make progress on providing financial
services to its population.
SPECIAL FEATURE
SAIL & SMS – a long standing partnership
The group therefore is very happy to be allowed to
make a contribution to the expansion plans decided upon
by SAIL in 2007; for example with the new building
projects at Salem, IISCO, and also at Rourkela itself.
Further important milestones were the major projects in
1970, 1982 and 1990.
For more than 50 years, the SMS Siemag has been
successful on the Indian market as a supplier of submerged
arc furnaces, steel meltshops, continuous casters, hot and
cold rolling mills and strip processing lines. As early as
1950, the former Siegener Maschinenfabrik, which is now
the SMS Siemag, was awarded the first orders for a
hydraulic press, a blooming mill and a bar mill at Tata
Steel.
REFRACTORY
Blast furnace refractory - performance lining
- wear mechanisms and solutions
The campaign life of the blast furnace is among other
factors determined by wear mechanisms of refractories in
different zones. As in upper areas of a blast furnace modern
repair techniques have been established, only the lower hearth
and bottom area below tuyeres in contact with slag and hot
iron cannot be repaired intermediate. Therefore lining concepts
for this area require a high quality lining material. One of
the most important wear parameter is Hot Metal Resistance,
its measurements and interpretation for Standard and Micro
Pore Carbon is explained in this article, additionally different
materials from the Micro Pore family will be compared. All
factors which influence the blast furnace campaign life shall
be briefly mentioned.
SPECIAL TECHNICAL FOCUS
State-of-the-art hot blast stoves
Hot blast stoves are essential to low-cost blast furnace operations and the availability and performance must be secured
by a sound design. This design has been developed in the 1960 – 70’s and includes various characteristic details to prevent
gas-channeling through the separation wall, dome integrity failures, stress corrosion, etc. More than 200 hot blast stoves
have been built since the first proto-type was installed at IJmuiden Works, The Netherlands. This article addresses choices
which can be made to optimize the hot blast stoves in the future, such as the optimum hot blast temperature, Silica or
High Alumina, etc.
Maximizing BOF production capacity and producing cost efficient by using sublance based process control
All around the world steel producers constantly seek to improve their production. This can be an increase in production capacity, triggered by an ever increasing market demand for steel or by the necessity to lower production cost to maintain competitive position. A proved method for obtaining these objectives is the introduction of the latest BOF process control model, which can dynamically adjust the steel making process by the use of sublance measurement data, such as steel
bath temperature, carbon content, phosphorous content and actual bath level. No other system can deliver tight end point control (Carbon content and Temperature) and all this crucial process data. That is why in the world largest steel producing country China, already more than 30 steel shops have chosen to install over 90 sublance systems producing in excess of 200 million tons per annum.
