VIEWPOINT
Union Budget 2008-09: steelmakers seek duties on imports, ore exports
Indian steel manufacturers have sought higher export duty on iron ore, raising of the customs duty on flat products to curb steel imports and withdrawal of customs duty on project imports for steel plants in India. The Indian Steel Alliance (ISA) has suggested an increase in export duty by 100% to Rs600 a tonne in the budget for 2008-09 to discourage Indian exports of iron-ore, which have risen 9% over the last six months.

FOCUS
ABB India growth momentum continues in 2007
The order momentum seen in the first three quarters continued with a fourth quarter order intake of 20033 MINR, 42 per cent higher than 2006Q4. ABB India’s cumulative order intake of 76682 MINR for the year 2007 touched a new high and grew 36 per cent over the previous year. “Our core power and automation businesses continue to grow well as we deliver value to our utility and industry customers through innovative technologies backed by our domain expertise and well acknowledged project execution capabilities.

COMPANY NEWS
Zero Drift Cooling Towers Armec Jet Towers
A cooling tower is a very tiny, trivial, last to be considered and insignificant capitol equipment in project stage. However, little we understand that, this will cause a continuous incurrence of cost of power by way of electricity and water charges, labour by way of regular cleaning of fills, oiling and greasing of gear boxes etc., and any shut down of the cooling tower, if there is no spare one, can cause the total shut down of the plant and machinery.

COMPANY PROFILE
Tenova Metal Making: - A network of advanced technologies for iron & steel
For Tenova Metal Making, 2007 is the year in which its operating and organisational integration is consolidated. This will optimise and stimulate the activities of an organisation that is strongly focused towards the global market and which currently has operative companies in five countries (Italy, Mexico, Canada, South Africa and China): The objective _ points out Raimondo di Carpegna Varini, Senior Vice President of Tenova, Head of Metal Making, is to build up a network in which the fluid exchange of information and know-how triggers cross-fertilisation, a process lying at the base of scientific culture and the growth of knowledge which also involves Tenova’s customers.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Global steel industry will continue to grow
The global steel industry is continuing to grow at a healthy rate. Global productions of crude steel, finished steel as well as their consumption are maintaining a growth path. The BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries are significant by contributing to the growth of global steel industry while a reduction in the share of world crude steel production is being witnessed in the developed countries like the USA, Japan and EU (27). Technological revolution is going on particularly among the leading steel producers of the world. Cost reduction and eco-friendly production have been most sought after foals of the industry.

STEEL TECHNOLOGY
Modeling and Simulation of the Fluid Flow in Continuous Slab Casting Mould
Fluid flow inside a continuous slab casting mould has been investigated using both water model experiments and numerical simulation methods. First the k-e model is used to obtain a time-averaged velocity field to learn about the basic flow pattern; then the LES method is performed to analyze instantaneous flow behavior. Simulation results have been compared and validated by experimental data. Results show that flow patterns in the mould change with time, and that the jet swing interacts with recirculation zones.

New Developments in Bar and Rod Mill Technology(1)
Developments in bar and rod mill equipment and mill layout designs continue to provide rolling mill operators with new ways to improve productivity and product quality. Advanced rolling equipment such as the Reducing/Sizing Mill, now being applied to both rod and bar mill configurations, enables significant improvements in mill utilization, while simultaneously enhancing the size tolerance of the finished product and providing the capability to do thermo mechanical rolling for metallurgical advantages. Other developments in the rolling line, such as high speed guides, new water box cooling nozzles, high speed shears and intelligent pinch rolls and new laying head features provide additional operational improvements.

CONFERENCE
International Tube, Metallurgy and Welding Show 2008 concluded with outstanding results
The internationally renowned Tube India International 2008, Metallurgy India 2008 and the 3rd edition of the welding show Schweissen & Schneiden India 2008, held concurrently in New Delhi concluded with outstanding results over the weekend, having attracted a significantly high number of exhibitors and visitors. This is the first time Messe Dücsseldorf India Pvt. Ltd., the Indian subsidiary of Messe Dü'fcsseldorf GmbH – world leaders in exhibitions across the globe and organizers of the leading shows like Tube Dücsseldorf, GIFA/METEC, INTERPACK, DRUPA and so on – held the shows in India.

COVER STORY
Viraj: providing stainless steel engineering products
In 1992, Viraj started manufacturing stainless steel in the stste promoted industrial area of Tarapur. It bought a sick unit and revived the induction furnace and its eroded market share. Initially the focus was on the local stainless steel market, but the vision had always been to sell internationally.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Indian Steel : future prospects
The Indian steel industry is on growth path. It has taken up massive brownfield and greenfield expansion programmes which are expected to take the country’s steel production level between 150 Mt to 180 Mt. The Indian steel producers are continuously upgrading their technologies for producing high volumes of value added steel conforming to the stringent international specifications.

SPONGE IRON
Indian sponge iron industry at top of the world
Although the BF-BOF route of iron and steel making accounts for over 65 percent of the global production of crude steel, the process requires various treatment of raw materials, involving high capital cost and substantial investment on infrastructure. It also leads to environmental problems and has along gestation period.

STEEL MARKET
2008: Another year for record global steel production
January transaction prices for austenitic stainless grades fell in most parts of the world. Exceptions were the United States and Spain. Mills in these countries currently use a reference period for surcharges based on alloy costs recorded two months prior to delivery of the steel. The remaining nations have either no alloy surcharge or the term for calculation is based on the price of inputs in the month before delivery of the stainless product.

Rising raw material costs to push steel prices to record highs in 2008
The appetite for steel continues unabated. World steel demand is forecast to reach over 1.45 MT in 2011. This represents a 320 MT hike on the outturn in 2006 and a massive 88% (680 MT) leap in the ten years from 2001. It is, however, predicted that a slowdown in the rate of growth towards the end of the current decade. Global finished steel consumption in 2007 is expected to expand by 7.1%, year on year. A further 21% increase is anticipated over the period to 2011.
