VIEWPOINT
Cost-effective advanced technology & the future of Indian refractory, a nice blend
Technological advancement in the metals industry is obvious and the
order of the day. The Indian refractor industry is also no way out of
this as technological advancement paves the way for cost-effectiveness
in the refractory manufacture. If more profitability is the ultimate goal
of any manufacturer, technological advancement is the only solution.
So far as cost effectiveness of various industries is concerned, it is the
main pillar profitable operation of a company. In Indian refractory
business also, there has been a nice blending of cost-effectiveness
through the application of advanced technology and Indian refractory
business today stands tall among the world refractory leaders.

Adhunik Metaliks sets first independent power project
Post recession, the most positive change is being noticed that all the massive projects that were held up during the tough period of recession, with the revival factor is actually being exercised to the fullest irrespective of the strength of the revival, that still continues be a debatable issue.
Tata Steel continues to grow stronger
in the depressing market state
Tata Steel made a disappointing performance for a second consecutive consolidated quarterly net loss of Rs 2,719.8 crore for the quarter ended September, compared with a net profit of Rs 4,703.6 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Consolidated net sales during the period plunged to Rs25,269.8 crore from the previous year’s Rs 44,050 crore, down 42.6%.

Indian steel: 2010 harangued a booming
price improvement
Onset of 2010 opens on a resplendent note for
Indian steel sector. Indian steel majors, who had
been sulking for the last couple of months in a
survival mode with two successive price cuts in
October and November, had reasons to feel
ebullient. The linkage of domestic prices with the
international levels is natural but the reactivity
has become sharper. The remarkable spontaneity
in price movements is primarily to close the gap
between “Desi” and “Videshi” prices rather than
demand supply equation.
The basic idea was to develop a self-reliant
economy providing a decent living to all
Excellencies, Friends, Ladies & Gentlemen,
I feel privileged to be here
with you this evening. It is
with a sense of humility I
accepted the invitation of Smt.

Swaminathan to deliver this
lecture to coincide with the
birth centenary of Sri S.

Indian Galvanised Steel Industry
– An Overview
Galvanised plain and corrugated steel sheets (GP/GC
Sheets) are valve added products that are sturdy, light
weight, bright in appearance, corrosion resistant and
environment friendly.
Galvanized steel is basically zinc coated products and
includes a range of hot-dipped and electro galvanized
steel. The function of the zinc layer is mainly three fold.
Fortune gets bigger for steel industry with
soaring global output
Similar statement given by global steel
consultancy MEPS stated earlier that, the outlook
for the global steel industry in 2010 is now looking
very positive, the consultancy giving major thrust
to the developing economies, stated in their forecast
that a new record output this year has listed the
increase in Chinese and Indian steel production
among its reasons for this bullish prediction and
that China’s steel production and demand would
continue its inexorable rise.
Steel prices likely to get dearer with higher
ore prices
The world steel industry seems to be slowly
and gradually recuperating its almost lost
vigour, as positive changes in the hard core
economic activities have started gaining
momentum shortly, projecting an escalating
demand curve.

Safety and Efficiency Improvements
Utilizing Digital DC Controls
Today’s global market presents pressures to
achieve what sometimes seem to be mutually
exclusive results: improved safety of personnel
and equipment; increased throughput efficiencies;
reduced energy consumption; reduced maintenance
costs; increased reliability; and reduced operating
costs.
REFRACTORY SPECIAL
Effects of globalisation on refractory
industry/Internationalisation of
refractories industry/Emerging trends
in refractories industry.
The World is Flat, says Thomas L. Friedman in his
international best selling book to describe the effects of
globalisation on commerce and industry. Globalisation has
not only broken the barriers but also shattered the
conventional concepts of business. Simultaneously,
the current global economy has become a level
playing field for all where all competitors have
an equal opportunity. Domestic producers may
now expand and emerge on international scene
for which it has been possible for consumers to
choose from a wide range of local and imported
commodities. At the same time the economic
expansion facilitated by trans-national movement
of capital has made the business world much more
competitive, contributing to economic and
corporate anxiety as well. The huge increase in
import penetration, plus the massive amounts of
overseas investment, means that firms of all sizes
face competitors from everywhere in the world.
This holds good for the Refractories industry as much as for
other industries.

Making Coke for Indian Blast Furnace
with Less Imported Coal
On December 4, 1958, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru,
replying to a question, said in the Rajya Sabha that India
was not fighting capitalism, communism or any other ism
but “we are fighting and struggling to achiever our own
objectives”. While declaring the Indian Science Policy, he
said that India could reduce the differenced between the
western and developed world only by successful advancement
in the science research. Though the Indian population is 18%
of the world population, the expenditure allotted in the
scientific research is less than 2%. In the US there are on an
average 100 scientific publications per one lakh population.
On the contrary, in India, it is only 2 scientific publications
per one lakh population. These clearly indicate that even
after 50 years of freedom we could not fulfill the dreams of
our first Prime Minister.

STEEL MAKING
The knowledge based foundation of
steelmaking & application in steel melt shop
Our knowledge and understanding of the physical,
chemical and thermal interactions among steel, slag,
gas and refractory phases during processing & transfer
operations have increased remarkably over the years.
This has helped create a solid process engineering
knowledge base, the wide spread application of which
on shop floor has brought in major technological
changes to transform steelmaking practice. As a result,
steelmakers are now empowered to design, automate
and control refining and transfer operations precisely
to ensure increased productivity, better product quality,
and lower specific energy consumption and so on.
In this work, the knowledge based foundation of
steelmaking and its relevance to process engineering
are discussed. In such context, the role of
thermodynamics, transport phenomena (fluid flow,
heat and mass transfer), reaction kinetics, modeling
and measurements are highlighted with the aid of
few examples and illustrations. The rigor with which
process engineering fundamentals is taught in the
undergraduate metallurgical engineering curriculum
is also examined simultaneously.
