VIEWPOINT
India's public & private sector steel industry progressing well according to plans
The stage is all set for the Indian iron and steel industry to excel from the current state and it is now an apt time to place the current calendar year in retrospect. The country now is on a continuous growth trajectory with a 9% plus GDP growth rate with inflation rate coming down slowly but steadily below 4.5% levels.
FOCUS
SAIL moves forward with pride

FERRO ALLOYS
Indian Ferro Alloy Industry - an overview
Ferro-alloys are essential additives in steel making that are used for imparting the desired properties to steel. Ferro alloys are added in steel production process for de-oxidation, grain size control as well as for the improvement in the
mechanical properties.
The product-mix of the Ferro-alloy industry mainly consists of Ferro-Manganese, Silico-Manganese, Ferro-Silicon, Ferro-Chrome and Charge-Chrome called Bulk Ferro-alloys which consists of Ferro-Molybdenum, Ferro-Titanium, Ferro-Tungsten, Ferro-Vanadium etc.
SPECIAL FEATURE
Working with Indian customers for a very long time he has experienced them to be very knowledgeable on technical front and it has been a great pleasure to work with them in India - Mr. Sanjeev Sinha
China has dominated the market for new plants in the new century. Its crude steel production grew from 127 MT per year in 2000 to 423 MT in 2006. All plant building companies worldwide participated in this boom by entering the Chinese market in different ways. But Siemens was present in China long before and our involvement in various projects provided us with good references in the country.
STEEL TECHNOLOGY
Shroud tube manipulators increase the work safety and the quality during casting
In the high tech process of „continuous casting“, there are still tasks carried out manually at some facilities. This
includes the handling of the shroud tubes. New manipulators designed on the basis of industrial robots, accelerate the handling, offer a high degree of safety for the personnel and guarantee a continuously high casting quality. Up-to-date casting processes like the submerged casting or the “noman-casting” are unthinkable without robot control.
STEEL MARKET
World crude steel output is now forecast to reach 1337 million tonnes this year. This represents a 7.5 percent increase on the 2006 figure. Continued buoyant demand in all parts of the globe with the exception of North America, have prompted slightly upgraded forecasts. Blast furnace iron production is now predicted to rise to 943 million tonnes -
up 7.9 percent on the outturn in the previous year.
STEEL INTERNATIONAL
World of steel to assemble at Singapore - Asia Steel 2008 to occur on 30-31 January, 2008
Asia Business Forum’s Asia Steel for 2008 is going to be held at Marina Mandarin hotel in Singapore on 30-31 January, 2008. Presentations and in-depth discussions will be made in this conference addressing major issues, trends, market
demands, opportunities and challenges in major markets like India and China as well as emerging markets.
GLOBAL STEEL
Global Steel Scenario Looks bright
The global steel industry is on a growth path. The global production of crude steel, finished steel as well as its
consumption has increased in 2006 over the previous year. The developing countries particularly those in Asia, are significantly contributing to the growth of the global steel industry.
STEEL TECHNOLOGY
Indian steel industry on a steady growth path
During the first half of 2006-07, the industry registered higher production and generated higher profits as compared
with H1 of 2005-06 – paving the way for a robust growth in the whole year of 2006-07. And, the industry has achieved this growth despite the higher prices of raw materials. India’s finished steel output may touch a level of 45 Mt in 2006-07. It has to be increased by another 15 Mt in next five years and by a further 50 Mt in the next 8 years to match the projections of National Steel Policy.
STAINLESS STEEL
Status & Future Outlook Of Stainless Steel Market In India
The term STAINLESS refers to a breed of alloy steels which are commonly stain-less that possess chromium as
the major gradient varying between 10% to 30% responsible for corrosion resistance. By altering the chromium content and addition of other alloying elements notably Ni, Mo, Mn, N, Cu,Ti, Nb etc., a host of stainless steels are produced offering varied micro-structures, physical, mechanical and chemical properties for specific application requirements. Accordingly, various stainless steel grades were developed through manipulation of the micro-structure which include Austenitic, Ferritic, Martensitic, Duplex and Precipitation Hardening stainless steels.
SPONGE IRON
Indian Sponge Iron Industry at top of the World
Although the BF-BOF route of iron and steel making accounts for over 65 percent of the global production of crude steel, the process requires various treatment of raw materials, involving high capital cost and substantial investment on infrastructure. It also leads to environmental problems and has along gestation period.
REFRACTORY
Indian refractory industry gears up to make the nation’s 200-mln-mt steel target by 2020 a bold reality
Global steel industry is on an upswing. If the year 2002-2003 saw the beginning of the surge in steel production, the year 2006-07 has provided another landmark with an aggregate of 45 million mt of crude steel in the country. Indian steelmakers too, both private and public sector players, remain upbeat about their improved volume of turnover, capacity utilization, sales and profit margins.
RAW MATERIAL
Let’s make a castable!!
Since the beginning of the 1980’s, Elkem Materials has been manufacturing microsilica for refractory purposes.
During these years, in spite of numerous attempts to link performance in castables and chemical analyses, no definitive
correlations have been found that could replace the sometimes tedious testing of new microsilica in castables.
MIDDLE EAST
Middle East Steel Industry- An Overview
According to IISI, Brussels’ geographical division, the Middle East Countries are Iran, Israel, Jordon, Qatar, Saudi
Arabia, Syria and the United Arab Emirates - total seven countries.
IRON ORE
Steel demand flat until next autumn, steel ingots prices firm despite low demand
Steel demand and buying will be flat until autumn. That hasn't’t happened this month, though, as early buyer surveys
find hot-rolled sheet selling in a wide range of $480 to $510/ton this month. The July average price of North America was $516. The world’s steel industry is bracing for a sixth straight year of iron ore price hikes as mining companies strive to keep up with growing demand led by China, the world’s biggest market. Iron ore prices are expected to rise 25% starting April 1, 2008, said some analysts, with some looking for a 50% hike in prices … a report.
