IRON & STEEL REVIEW
August 2009

Analysts see the market already passing its low-point |

SAIL cuts long product prices
India’s largest steel producer Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) in its recent statement said that it had cut the prices of its long products used primarily in construction by Rs1,500-2,000 a tonne and might further lower the rates if the situation so warranted according to a recent report.
Essar Steel enters into an agreement to acquire steel assets of Shree Precoated Steels
Essar Steel Limited (Essar Steel) today announced that it has entered into a definitive Business Transfer Agreement with Shree Precoated Steels Limited (SPSL) to acquire the entire assets and steel business of the Company. This agreement is subject to regulatory and other approvals.
VIEWPOINT
Analysts see the market already passing its low-point
India’s steel production by FY10-11 could reach 80-85 MT, according to SAIL, up from around 60 MT expected in FY08-09, as a result
of domestic demand. Following BMI’s revision in forecasts, we believe that output in the 2011 calendar year will reach 82.8 MT, up from 78.2 MT. By 2013, forecasts indicate that output will reach 96.8 MT, although this will partly depend on approvals and commissioning of steel plants. This would represent a rise in output of 76% over the five-year period.

Mr. Jay Kumar, Process Equipment, GEA IHE Systems India, while talking to our Editor Mr. Santosh Mahanti.
FOCUS
Assessing sustainability of steel industry in India
The economic boom in China and India has caused a rapid boom in the demand for iron and steel in the recent years. Between 2000 and 2005, world steel demand increased 6 percent. The demand is further expected to increase with planned infrastructure spend, rising construction activity and increased consumerism leading to demand for consumer durables. With these drivers in mind, several national and international players have announced plans to raise existing capacities or set up shops in the country, although deferred temporarily. These expansions would entail considerable impact on social and economic dimensions of the country.
India has huge potential to make it big through calculative steps formulating prudent & cautious policies
The UPA government coming to power amidst the most difficult times brought with it many hopes and promises and the recent declaration of the Union Budget 2009-10, although made the industry circle feel neglected, but then considering the budget at the time when the world economy nearly went frozen, the industry circle is optimistic about the government’s programmes to take the GDP to 9%, and keeping all their hopes and aspirations riveted, want to concentrate all their strength and potentials in effective policy making for colossal development in the upcoming days.
Growth prospects of the Indian Steel Industry after October 2008
Steel industry world-wide suffered a severe setback in the latter part of the year 2008 in the aftermath of the global economic meltdown. The Indian economy and India's thriving steel industry have both been affected adversely by the economic downturn that originated in the developed west and its contagion that spread quickly far and wide across the globalized world of the 21st century.
INTERVIEW
Refractories industry is presently doing well due to lot of initiatives taken by the Government
It is true that a lot of refractories materials are getting imported from China and also it is a fact that these are available
with very competitive prices. We however do not agree that the qualities of the same are at par with the best products.
From China whatever is imported is mostly due to OEM contracts where the clients do not have much say on the
refractories procurement as the deal is finalized as a package, said Dr. A.K. Chattopadhyay while talking to
Mr. Santosh Mahanti, our Editor.
STEEL TECHNOLOGY
New Technology for optimum efficiency
In these tough economic times Siemens VAI realise the importance of controlling both quality and productivity to ensure the mill is run in the most cost efficient way. To assist producers in these economic times, Siemens VAI are pleased to introduce two new products aimed at improving
production efficiency for long product producers.
Start-up of the No. 3 Blast Furnace of JSW Steel Ltd. India’s Largest Blast Furnace
JSW Steel is the fastest-growing private-sector steel company in India. In order to increase steel production from four to seven million tons of steel per year, the company launched its so-called Cheetah project. Major investments were made in new hot-metal-production and steelmaking
facilities.
Setting the Pace for the Future of Technology
Based on 40 years of experience in electric steelmaking, Siemens VAI focuses on the main areas for continual improvement, including optimizing consumption parameters, reducing tap-to-tap times and fulfilling the requirements of maximum automation. This results in following developments with respect to maximum operator safety, minimum manual operations, increased process flexibility, and lower off gas and electrical emissions.
STEEL INTERNATIONAL
Modernisation of submerged arc furnace at RW silicium GmbH successfully completed
RW silicium GmbH, Pocking, Germany, has put its silicon submerged arc furnace back into operation following successful modernisation.
Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK), Russia, commissions extensive equipment made by SMS. Order value EUR 400 million.
In the presence of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin a heavy plate mill made by SMS Siemag was put into operation.
June 2009 Crude Steel Production for the 66 countries reporting to worldsteel
World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 99.8 million metric tons (mmt) in June. This is 16% lower than in June 2008.
STEEL COMPANY
SAIL registers profit after tax (PAT) of Rs.1326 crore in Q1
In spite of input cost pressures and price realisations being far below the significantly high levels obtained in the first quarter of FY ’09, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) recorded profit before tax (PBT) of Rs. 2,005.91 crore (lower by 28% y-o-y) and profit after tax (PAT) of Rs. 1,326.09 crore (lower by 27.7% y-o-y) during Q1 of the current financial year. The company’s net turnover at Rs. 8,950.64 crore was lower by 16.5% over the corresponding period last year (CPLY). These unaudited financial results of SAIL were taken on record here today by the company’s Board of Directors.
STEEL MARKET
Steel prices in developing markets suffer contagion from industrialised nations, says MEPS
There is still downward pressure on US transaction prices, although the rate of decrease has decelerated. Mill outages continue, with operating levels quoted at between 40 and 50 percent, depending on the facility. Deliveries are running late because of the production constraints. Nevertheless, distributors are keeping inventories at the lowest levels in many years as they react to the sharp decline in end-user steel demand caused by the economic recession.
REFRACTORY
Some general observations on refractories for Ironmaking and Steelmaking
Most global players are supplying from China to reduce costs. Exports from China, presently attract around 12% export incentives. With huge resources of low ash coal, magnesite, bauxite and other strategic items, China is/will control the world market. Total refractory production in India is 1.08 Mt at present; about 20% of it is sourced from China, i.e, around 0.3 Mt. Imports from China alone constituted Rs. 274 Cr (12% of the domestic sales).
New generation slide gate mechanism for higher multiple life of slide gate plates
The production of clean steel with minimum specific consumption of refractory has become the main goal of steel
makers and refractory manufacturers. Consumption of slide gate plate plays very important role to achieve the same.
Life of SG plates is mainly guided by its safety factor which is mostly dependent on the type of slide gate mechanism.
New generation SG mechanism – TN series has been developed to get higher multiple lives of plats. High emphasis
has been given on safety factor while developing the mechanism. This was tried a full ladle campaign at an integrated
steel plant in India and excellent service performance was observed.
Research on Refractory Raw Materials at CGCRI: A review
Globally, major refractory products are consumed by the iron and steel industries (nearly 75%), the remaining being shared by cement, glass, non-ferrous and other high temperature processing industries. In India, the last decade showed tremendous growth in these industries. Consequently, the demand for refractories is continuously growing. The manufacture of high performance refractories requires high purity refractory grade natural raw materials which are not abundantly available in our country. On the other hand the refractory consumption has been drastically reduced including in India. The current average specific consumption of refractory in Indian steel industry is 12 – 13 kg / ton of steel, but the target is 7 – 8 kg/ ton of steel in the future years to come. Hence there is a need to supply low volume, good quality refractory materials to the consuming industries. Parallely the Indian refractory manufacturers are passing through a serious crisis of getting desired quality refractory raw materials either natural or synthetic.
Fundamentals of Indian economy remains bullish & the worst may be over
As I pen this article, globally steel is on the brink and the global industry is cutting back hard, pinning its hope on resuscitated demand from China, new access of credit for vast West Asian real estate sector or resurrection of the US and European auto industry. Demand has dwindled and steel makers, including the giant of them all, ArcelorMittal, are cutting down surplus furnace capacity while waiting for credit to flow, construction cranes to move and infrastructural activities to roll. A recent decision by ArcelorMittal to pursue temporary production cutbacks, slashing European output by more than half from the end of April, dramatizes the extraordinary ride and role of steel in the last few years. Corus too has not been left behind with a production cut of around 40 per cent.
ROLLING TECHNOLOGY
SLIT Rolling Technology in Bar Mills Capacity 400,000 Tons/Annum
The KAMACHI GROUP of Chennai, India has currently got a new steel mill under construction in the State of Tamil Nadu. M/s RANA UDYOG PRIVATE LTD of Calcutta working in co-operation with MWE Magdeburger Walzwerk Engineering GmbH have been awarded a contract for the design, manufacture, supply, erection & commissioning of the bar mill with a design capacity of 400,000 Tons/Year.
