SAIL’s stake sale & Indian steel industry outlook for 2012
|
VIEWPOINT
SAIL’s stake sale & Indian steel industry outlook for 2012
At a time when steel consumption in India is expected to grow
significantly in the coming years, the Indian government approved a
20 per cent disinvestment in Steel Authority of India Ltd. The decision
was long overdue and was held to be announced when it was the
correct time for it. What could have been a more accurate time for
the announcement than the post economic recession era, when the
Indian economy is just showing signs of an overall recovery, mainly
in the steel sector?

SPECIAL FEATURE
Global steel demand
expected to grow in 2010
Industry association the World Steel Association (WSA)
forecasts that apparent steel use will contract globally by
–8,6%, to 1,104-million tons, in 2009, after declining by
–1,4% in 2008, while global steel demand in 2010 is forecast
to grow by 9,2%, to 1,206-million tons. The improvement
is largely owing to the exceptionally strong growth in steel
demand in China. WSA economics committee chairperson
Daniel Novegil says that the global recovery is stronger
than the decrease of –14,1% predicted in April.
STEEL TECHNOLOGY
Slab caster concepts for the
production of pipe and plate grades
For us, the market requirements are a daily yardstick.
The challenge we face is to design plants that can satisfy
the needs of the market long after the commissioning of
the caster or at least can be adapted to future requirements.
The market nowadays demands more and more for
high sophisticated steel grades for the automotive and
construction industries, for bridge building (e.g. the viaduct
de Millau, built with nearly 43,000 t of steel produced by
AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke), power plants and for tube
and pipe production. Pipe grades namely up to API X-100
are of special interest and under development. Only a very
few steelmaking companies are able to produce these steel
grades fulfilling the strong requirements. SMS Siemag’s
continuous casting machines come with
X-Cast technologies that ensure these requirements like
excellent surfaces and a high internal slab quality with a
homogenous microstructure. At the same time, these casting
machines combine high productivity through short set-up
times and permanent availability.

FOCUS
A positive tone with steel prices showing northward movement, at par with global trends, says JPC
With domestic steel producers going in for an allround
price increase in response to rising demand at home,
it does seem to mark an (un)-official end to the year-long
slowdown. December 2009 thus saw the year conclude
on a high and positive note with sentiments picking up
across sectors, helped to quite an extent by encouraging
news of growth in oft-tracked economic parameters.
Meanwhile, based on January – November 2009 data as
reported by the World Steel Association, India’s rank as
the fifth largest global producer of crude steel was
reinstated, after a brief climb to the third and then the
fourth largest positions during the year.
Prospect of commercial production of ferro-nickel production in India
The most important use of nickel is in steel industries where bulk of it or nickel in alloy form is required for the production of stainless steel.
The country imports ferro-nickel as there is no viable process to produce ferro-nickel from the internal resources. Looking into the country’s
import of nickel to meet its requirement, efforts have been made to produce ferro-nickel from the workable deposit lateritic ores or chromite
overburden in Sukinda region, Orissa. The lateritic ore or Chromite overburden materials is reduced by pan sintering technique followed by
magnetic separation and the smelting of magnetic fraction to produced ferro nickel. The smelting studies have been carried out using various
amount of reductant and it has been possible to produce Fe-Ni of grade varying from 4 – 25% Ni.
INDUSTRIAL FURNANCES
Silicon steel is a winner for LOI Italimpianti
“If you want to make it through an economic crisis you have to have the right products available for that situation. And when it comes to silicon steel production lines, we are not just the best. We are practically the only company able to supply the whole transformation process.” Hermann Stumpp, Head of LOI Italimpianti, speaks with the confidence of a man who has successfully stemmed the negative effects of the global economic crisis. In addition to being an important commodity for countless applications, steel is needed to conduct magnetic fluxes in transformers and electric machines. The most common type of steel used for conduction is grain-oriented electrical steel. This is produced not in the form of wires, but
as 0.2-0.3 mm thick “sheets”, with a small percentage of silicon as the alloying element and close alignment of the atomic lattices in the individual grains.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Successful startup and commissioning of the Energiron Direct Reduction Plant at Emirates Steel Industries, UAE
The first of two Energiron Direct Reduction Plants
(DRP) of ESI passed the performance test successfully in
December 2009, only one month after the issuance of the
Hot Test Certificate. In the last 10 days of January 2010
the plant has performed at an average of 220 tph, with a
record daily production of 5,895 t (eq. to 246 tph) on Feb.
1, 2010. This is the highest level of productivity ever
achieved by a single DRI reactor. The commissioning was
carried out jointly by Danieli Centro Metallics and Tenova
HyL. The ESI plant produces cold or hot or DRI, the latter
being fed directly to the EAF at a temperature of 600°C
as part of an integrated minimill complex that also includes
a meltshop and two rolling mills (wire rod line and bar
line) supplied on a turnkey basis by Danieli.
New Wide Plate Mill started up in the Middle East Danieli Wean United concept wide plate mill represents the winning solution for a modern approach to the plate market.
Plates are produced through conventional and
thermo-mechanical rolling with accelerated
cooling. In addition to the rolling and plate
finishing lines, heat treatment facilities are
provided for plate normalizing as well as for
hardening and tempering. The input slabs are
charged by cranes on a charging bench and are
reheated on two walking-beam furnaces with a
production capacity of 250 tpy, supplied by Danieli
Centro Combustion. At the exit of furnace the
slabs proceed to the four-high reversing plate mill
through a high-pressure descaling box. Highpressure
water sprays (220 bar) are used to this
purpose. To allow constant impact pressure on
the slab surface a screwjack system is used to
adapt the top header position to the entry thickness
of the slab. The rolling mill is composed of one
reversing stand, so that the complete rolling process
from entry thickness/width to final thickness/width
is achieved within the same mill. The four-high
stand incorporates the most modern technological
advances available, such as bottom HAGC with
top screwdown, bending system, Roll Thermal
Crown control, on-board high-pressure descaler
system, DanOil oil-film bearings, etc.
