Review of Global Steel Technology and Market
VIEWPOINT
Minerals: Backbone of Economic Growth
Looking at what the nature has to offer, it gives a lot of information when it comes
to things that it holds in it. Likewise, minerals form the backbone of economic
growth of every nation. Among other countries, India is eminently endowed with this
gift of nature and is largely self-sufficient in most of the minerals which include
bauxite, barytes, chromite, dolomite, iron ore, kyanite, limestone, copper ore,
manganese ore, magnesite etc.
SPECIAL FEATURE
Mineral Processing & Engineering Innovation
The journey of Hari Machines Limited (HML) began way back in the early 70’s with
setting up of Rajgangpur Engineering Works in Odisha. It catered to the local steel
and refractory industries, with business interests primarily in the in east. By
the beginning of the year 2000, it had an average annual turnover of Rs. 10 crore.
“The transformation came post 2000 when we reorganized to take the most out of the
changes with the opening up of the economy,” informed Mr. RH Dalmia, Chairman Hari
Machines Ltd., HML diversified its product portfolio, manufactured machinery and
provided services for cement, mining and metallurgical industries that began to
grow in the eastern region.
INDIAN STEEL SCENARIO
Indian Steel's Magnificent Seven
It was due to the great vision and enterprise of Jamshetji Nusserwanji that the
Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) was formed in 1907 and the first ingot of the
TISCO plant, at Sakchi (later named as Jamshedpur) in the then Bihar, was rolled
on 16th February, 1912.

Managing change for market leadership in Indian Steel Sector through E-Commerce
A great change took place in 1947 when India became free from English Rule. Government
of India put a new thrust for industrialization of the country. Policies of industrialization
were implemented with sincere belief in efficacy of socialist philosophy and political
democracy. Heavy investment by Government in Steel Industry laid the foundation
of strong edifice. This was the vision for building an economically independent
new India. And we never looked back since then.
IRON ORE
-
Process for manufacture of ferrovanadium from vanadium bearing magnetite ore of
Odisha
Ferro-Vanadium is a strategic material used in production of high tensile structural
steel, alloy, tool and special steels. Ferro-Vanadium is manufactured from different
raw-materials. A major portion of the production is met from vanadium bearing titaniferrous
magnetite iron ore. Presently, the ferro-vanadium requirement of the country is
being met by imports.
MINERAL PROCESSING
The Evolution of Ferro-Niobium production at CBMM
The Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração (CBMM) has been mining and producing
ferro-niobium (FeNb) and niobium products for over forty-five years in Araxá, Brazil.
It continues to be the world’s premiere FeNb producer and supplier. A key feature
of the company has been its strategy of development and innovation, enabling CBMM
to compete not only in FeNb markets but also to enter new areas such as the electronics
and chemical sectors.
Kalinganagar Industrial Development Opportunity in Odisha
The state of Odisha is endowed with vast mineral deposits like Coal, Iron Ore, Manganese
Ore, Bauxite, Chromite, etc. According to All India Mineral Resources Estimates,
the minerals deposits of Odisha in respect of Chromite, Nickel Cobalt, Bauxite,
Iron Ore were about 98.4% 95.1%, 77.5%, 52.7% and 33.4% respectively, of the total
deposits in India. Other important mineral resources of the State are Limestone,
China Clay, Quartzite, Precious and Semi-Precious Stones, Copper, Vanadium etc.
COAL FEATURE
-
Tri-Flo®:-The New Generation Multistage Heavy Media Separation Technology for High
Ash Indian Coals
Coal remains a vital source of energy worldwide and is essential for the power &
steel industry. High quality coal reserves are becoming scarce worldwide. Modern
highly mechanized coal mining technologies and their economical optimization reduce
the clean coal yield and make it more difficult to control the product quality.
When it becomes necessary to improve the quality of run-of-mine coal with a washing
process, the selection of the suitable technology is often paramount in achieving
operational profitability.

NMDC unveiling in Coal sector
NMDC, (a Navratna PSU of the Govt. of India), is the country's biggest iron ore
miner and h a s s u c c e s s f u l l y completed 52 years of an enriching journey
with significant achievements. To enable its diversification into other activities,
NMDC's Memorandum and Articles of Association were amended to include Coal mining,
Steel production and Power generation. Subsequently, NMDC has taken the first step
towards realization its of vision by its foray into Coal mining & Steelmaking beside
its core business of iron ore mining.
