EDITOR'S COMMENT
Huge opportunities ahead of the foundry sector
The Indian steel industry is thinking big. The process is not confined to the planning level anymore with both greenfield and brownfield expansion projects worth crores are underway at various plant sites. This massive capacity addition is likely to benefit the foundry sector in two ways.
SPECIAL COVERAGE
EMI shielding characteristic of zinc die castings
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI): EMI/RFI is electronic noise. It is both natural and man made. It can be extremely annoying and may be disastrous as well. Shielding is required to guard against such catastrophes. As consequence, proper shielding constitutes a quality parameter in the manufacture of all items of electronic equipment.
Malleable cast iron
Malleable cast iron is a heat-treated iron-carbon alloy, which solidifies in the as-cast condition with a graphite-free structure, i.e. the total carbon content is present in the cementite form (Fe3C).

IN FOCUS
Contribution to detection and sizing linear defects by phased array ultrasonic techniques
A large variety of linear defects - as nature, size, shape, orientation and location - machined in turbine components and bar specimens were investigated by phased array ultrasonic techniques: specular, skew and back shattering. Defect size (length x height) range is between 2mm x 0.5mm, 9 x 0.15mm upto 115mm x 14mm and 96mm x 17mm.
Classification of cast iron
The term cast iron, like the term steel, identifies a large family of ferrous alloys. Cast irons are multicomponent ferrous alloys. They contain major (iron, carbon, silicon), minor (<0.01%), and often alloying (>0.01%) elements. Cast iron has higher carbon and silicon contents than steel.
TECHNOLOGY FOCUS
The multiphysics modelling of solidification and melting processes
Solidification and melting processes involve a range of physical phenomena and their interactions (i.e. multiphysics). Computational modeling of such processes presents a significant challenge, both in representing the physics involved and in handling the resulting coupled behaviour. Two methods for the computational modeling of multiphysics processes in complex geometrics are highlighted in the context of four challenging applications.
Acoustic emission for corrosion detection
Corrosion is the major cause of structural degradation; the process od corrosion itself usually causes acoustic emission as a result of the fracture and disponding of expansive corrosion products. This means that the method may be used for corrosion detection and quantification of corrosion rate. This paper describes the use of acoustic emission for corrosion detection in storage tanks, reinforced concrete structures, and process equipment.
TECHNOLOGY/PROCESS REVIEW
Grain refinement of secondary aliminium-silicon casting alloys
Secondary aluminium alloy castings generally have inferior ductility compared to primary alloy castings as the higher level of impurities form brittle intermetallic phases. It is possible to reduce the detrimental effects of impurities by grain refinement thus reducing the size of these brittle phases.
Ultra thin wall zinc die castings
Since the introduction of all kinds of electronic data logging and data transfer applications, protection against Electro-magnetic Interference (EMI) became a major problem. An intrinsic property of all heavy metals is their excellent performance in EMI shielding. Zinc die casting alloys also have their capability. The industry is always looking for lightweight boxes with good EMI shilding properties.
