NEWS CORNER

COMPOSITES EUROPE - an institution in the European market
COMPOSITES EUROPE the trade fair for composites, has established itself as an industry institution. This year, from 27 to 29 October in Stuttgart, the specialist fair will present technologies and products covering the entire value creation chain for reinforced plastics from raw material to the finished product, as well as the latest processing and manufacturing technologies, for the fourth time. COMPOSITES EUROPE will showcase innovative solutions for major sectors of application, such as the automotive sector, the aerospace industry as well as the building and construction sector - tailor-made to fit the current requirements on material properties, such as lightweight construction, energy efficiency or improved corrosion resistance.

Conbraco Industries adds new furnace
Valve maker Conbraco Industries Inc., Matthews, NC, has added a new furnace for the heat treatment of its metal castings said recent news. To which industry sources said to the media that, the new furnace represents the fourth vacuum acquired by Conbraco, which maintains metal casting capabilities in the manufacture of its Apollo Valves, purchased the new vacuum furnace from Ipsen Inc., Cherry Valley, III. Ipsen recently shipped Conbraco the furnace, which will be used to harden stainless steel castings.

According to a press release issued by the company, MCC will continue to operate as usual under its current name but will have an expanded global market presence under roll and sheet caster ESW.

Thyssen Krupp supplies materials for high temperatures in turbochargers
Thyssen Krupp VDM has developed a tailored hightech solution for the manufacture of turbocharger gaskets, a recent casting news reported. To which company sources while providing information to the press said, The material Nicrofer 5120 CoTi has been adapted to automotive applications and will shortly also be available in coil form. The special feature of Nicrofer 5120 CoTi is its strong yet flexible molecular structure.

FOCUS
Influence of First-Step Temperature on the Wear Behaviour of Ductile Iron Subjected to Two-Step Austemperingt
Ductile cast iron containing 1.5 wt. % nickel. 0.5 wt. % copper and 0.3 wt. % molybdenum as alloying elements was studied in the present investigation. It was subjected to a two step austempering treatment, in which the ductile iron after austenitising was austempered successively at two temperatures. The time duration of the first step austempering was varied while that of the second was held constant. Microstructures were studied through optical microscopy and xray diffraction while the mechanical properties were characterised through hardness measurements and tensile test. Wear rate was studied using a pinon-disc type of machine. It was found that the wear rate decreased as the first step time was increased. This was correlated with the microstructure and mechanical properties. It was found that while at long first step times hardness was the critical criterion, at short first step times microstructure played a significant role. It was found that formation of strain induced martensite was important in controlling the wear rate at short first step times.

COMPANY PROFILE
Long sustained growth in the labyrinth
According to the recent assessments, experts view that the domestic coke making – mainly met coke – industry, the most important supporting industry to all the heavy metals industries, is actually showing up in India amidst the nose wide gap between the demand and the supply created by the ugly economic meltdown, which almost crushed the production of the industries to a huge extent and also led to the closure of many small and sunrise industries.

PRODUCT PROFILE
Nickunj Eximp Entp brings to India Induction Vacuum Casting Machine, Embedding Machine & Water Jet
In the recently concluded IFEX 2009 at Kolkata, Nickunj Eximp Entp P Ltd, Mumbai unveiled “PROFICAST” brand equipment for induction vacuum casting and accessories manufactured by DOIT Mechatronik GmbH, Neuhausen, Germany.

CASE STUDY
CARAT – A partnership for productivity
The Swiss are generally considered highly conservative; the people in the Appenzell region are regarded as perhaps the most conservative. “As if time had stood still” is Appenzell’s slogan to attract visitors. Many old habits still flourish here – and not just for the benefit of tourists.

SPECIAL COVERAGE
Stovetop Metalcasting or Revenge of the Whacked-Out Psychedelic Plastic Medival Knight on Quaaludes
If you want to melt metal without going through all the rigamarole of charcoal and blowers and whatnot, you can use an electric burner. This can actually be done indoors, if you're careful!

First Try
My first try involved a home-made stove made from a 1500-watt 240-volt burner, but run on 120 volts. Since current is proportional to voltage, and power is proportional to the square of current, halving the voltage quartered the power, and 375 watts was just not enough to melt anything.

TECHNOLOGY/PROCESS REVIEW
Magnesium Casting Industry Today
Magnesium castings are light, abundant, and recyclable. The lightest of all commonly used metal castings, magnesium castings dampen noise and vibration, are highly impact and dent resistant, and are easily machined. Perhaps the most important advantage of magnesium castings is found in the environmental performance gains in automotive applications.

No-Bake Moulding Sand Using Cashewnut Shell Oil as Binder and Manganese Dioxide as Hardener
In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to use cashewnut shell oil an industrial bi-product as a foundry sand Cinder along with manganese dioxide as hardener to bring about the selfsetting reaction. A systematic and detailed investigation has been carried out to determine various properties like compression strength, strip time, setting time, permeability, friability, mould gas evolution and knock-out property of sand mixture for this system. In addition, aluminium and gray iron castings were made in this sand mould and surface finish of the castings were assessed. Results of the experimental work reveal that strength developed is quite high; strip time, and pouring time is considerately low Further an interesting feature of this binder system is its relatively low gas evolution in combination with good permeability. Friability and surface finish was found to be satisfactory with good collapsibility. The favourable properties of cashewnut shell oil binder system along with its availability in the market will definitely help foundrymen.

Experimental Analysis of Flow of Ductile /Cast Iron in Streamlined Gating Systems†
Streamlined gating systems have been developed for production of high Integrity ductile cast iron parts. Flow of ductile cast iron in streamlined gating systems was studied in glass-fronted sand moulds where flow in the gating system and casting was recorded by a digital video camera. These results are compared with real time X-ray recordings of melt flow. Results show that flow patterns are the same using both techniques. The glass-fronted moulds give global information on flow in the whole gating system and casting while the X-ray analysis gives detailed information on specific areas. The experiments show how the quality of pouring, design of ingates, design of bends and flow over cores influence melt flow and act to determine the quality of the castings.

Mechanical/hydraulic retrofit Old iron is not necessarily scrap iron!
Time also leaves its marks on die casting machines. After years of reliable operation, the question arises as to the future of a production system. Replacement or reconditioning?
