CASTING TECHNOLOGY
January - April 2010
A Complete Global Publication on Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Foundries
Global markets bound to offer ample opportunity in coming years |
NEWS CORNER
Foundry Industry in Gujarat Revives
Foundry industry in Gujarat revives with the revival
in demand from domestic engineering and automobile sectors
in the recent period. Engineering sector witnessed more than
50% increase in demand since March 2009, which is expected
to continue during the year. Demand from export sector is
yet to pick up.
Revival of Foundry Industry in Punjab Retarded by Power Cut
Metal casting industry is trying hard to come out of
recession. In fact, the industry has already started to revive
at a slow pace in the country. Foundries in Punjab, a state
where a number of metal casting units of various sizes exist,
started to move towards the hay days gradually. But, heavy
power cut has hit the industry badly.
Indian SMEs Suffer in spite of Government Efforts
In spite of the efforts given by the government sector
in order to mitigate hardships of small & medium enterprises
(SMEs) of India, the sector is facing continuous struggle.
From a survey revealed by the Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) on the sector,
it was found that majority of the respondents are not aware
of the steps being taken by the government to help SMEs in
coming out of the global economic crisis.
Save Energy Enviro Forum on World Environment Day
The Steel Furnace Association of India (SFAI) observed
the World Environment Day on June 5, 2009 by organising
‘Save Energy Enviro Forum’ at India Habitat Centre, New
Delhi. World Foundry Organization (WFO) supported the
event. Chief Guest Dr. Uday Pratap Singh, Jt Secretary,
Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India in his address appreciated
the efforts put in by SFAI for energy efficiency and energy
conservation.
TECHNOLOGY FOCUS
Innovations on Twin Roll Casting Process and Techniques
The Optiflow® System is a patented
system created by FATA Hunter, a division
of FATA S.p.A., which consist of a group of
modular metal feed and distribution products
for aluminum twin roll continuous casters.
The Optiflow® System has been developed to
offer the end user greater flexibility in the cast
house by minimizing downtime and increasing
cast house profitability.
EDITOR'S COMMENT
Global markets bound to offer ample opportunity in coming years
Considering all the regions and sectors, the state of the foundry industry at present,
in general, across India, and across the globe as well, was buoyant with optimistic
predictions prevailing in the all corners of the market. Among the user industries, the
tractors industry, in particular, is said to be at its peak currently with the manufacturers
having set a record high sales. They are obviously keeping the foundry industry busy
to its core.
REFRACTORY
Development of ladle shroud for longer sequence casting
Ladle shrouds are isostatically pressed alumina-graphite
refractory products where carbon-bonding provides adequate
strength. Being neutral in nature, alumina has corrosion
resistance against both liquid steel and molten slag. But,
the spalling resistance of alumina is poor due to its low
thermal conductivity and high thermal expansion. Presence
of graphite gives the required resistance to spalling. Nonwetting
characteristics of graphite adds resistance to corrosion
against both liquid steel and slag.
SEMINAR & CONFERENCE
Evolve a suitable road map for growth of the Indian steel industry
Despite the strong adverse impact of the global meltdown,
steel production in India registered positive growth of around
3.4% in the first quarter of the FY2009-10 in comparison
to the similar period of the FY2008-09 mainly due to the
strong demand in the Indian domestic market segment and
higher infrastructure spending by the government in the last
couple of years through budget allocations. Steel consumption
in the country went up by 5.3% during Q1FY2009-10.

TECHNOLOGY/PROCESS REVIEW
Studies on a High Strength AL-Zn-Mg-Cu Cast Alloy
Aluminium is best known for two properties - light
weight and corrosion resistance. Apart from light weight,
the special advantages of aluminium alloys for castings are
the relatively low melting temperatures, low solubility of all
gases except hydrogen, and the good surface finish that is
possible to be achieved in the cast products. Despite the
development of novel engineering materials such as fibrereinforced
composites, aluminium alloys still continue to be
the dominating structural materials, mainly due to their high
specific strength (strength/density).
Sound Casting Detection of Dokra Casting by SEM-EDX Techniques*
The microstructure of Dokra casting1 varies with
variation of percentage of elements. Distribution of element
in different phases may be obtained by EDX. The elemental
variation in the different pahases is due to non-uniform
solubility in different solid solution2. Solidification occurs
over a range of temperature and different phases form at
different temperature regimes.
